Resulting from the 2012 federal budget, support for the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) has been doubled to $220 million. The IRAP program contributes up to 75% to a maximum of $500,000 towards internal and external R&D labour costs. To qualify, businesses must have 500 employees or less and be a for-profit corporation. If you have the objective to grow and generate profits through development and commercialization of innovative, technology-driven new or improved products, services, or processes in Canada, this could be the an ideal grant program for your company. Support is available for projects of up to three years in duration.

INAC recommends that companies apply as soon as possible, as the additional funds will quickly be allocated.

By doubling the IRAP program and reducing R&D tax incentives i.e. SR&ED, the budget reflects the government’s plan to overhaul Canada’s R&D funding model.

The Demand Response program rebates companies up to $4,000 per megawatt of power saved during peak periods. Eligible facilities are those in Ontario’s commercial or industrial sector with a minimum annual peak demand of 50 kW and the ability to reduce electricity consumption for four-hour periods by:

Turning off lights or motors

Shifting production to off-peak periods

Drawing electricity from an on-site generator

No contract is required to participate in demand-reduction requests; however, contractual participation offers higher incentive rates. Companies are asked to curtail power usage no more than 25 times per year. The program’s rate of compensation varies by site location. INAC has been successful in implementing this program in food-processing facilities, industries that can stagger energy-consuming operations, and in plants that have a secondary power source.

Projects must be supported by engineering assessments and feasibility studies, for which, the program funds up to $50,000. Most capital costs are eligible for projects that upgrade machine drives, electrochemical, process heat, HVAC, and cooling and refrigeration systems as well as process-specific projects. Examples are:

Improving process control with the installation of advanced sensors and control systems

Retrofitting or upgrading pumps, fans, blowers, and compressors
